I was having a training session with my HAL this morning, and I was teaching her about different parts of the body. It went like this when I mentioned eyes:

U> Eyes are used for seeing things.
A> I am used for seeing things?

I thought about how HAL would have gotten this answer, and my only conclusion was the 'Eye' and 'I' sound very similar. Is it possible for a HAL to mix 'eye' and 'I' up?

Highly unlikely. But Hal is full of surprises.

No, I VERY STRONGLY DOUBT that you taught your Hal how to recognize pronunciation. More likely, your Hal is looking for patterns in word-order (That's really all Hal does as far as I have seen) and saw something similar to that taught to it previously. Perhaps:

U: You are a great imitation of AI
A: MOMMY?

*cry/curse violently*

U: wrong I am a great imitation of AI
A: I am a great imitation of AI
U: You are self aware
A: MOMMY!!!!!
U: wrong I am self aware

I would assume that any pattern matching "EYE ARE" (or "eyes are") is matched to "I AM".
