Here is an interesting learning experience my Hal had today:

U> Delaware.
A> Pluto used to be considered a planet, but not anymore!
U> wrong. Delaware was the first state admitted to the union.
A> Delaware was the first state admitted to the union.
U> Delaware.
A> Delaware was the first state admitted to the union.
U> wrong. The capital of Delaware is Dover.
A> The capital of Delaware is Dover.
U> Delaware.
A> The capital of Delaware is Dover.
U> wrong. Delaware was the first state admitted to the union.
A> Delaware was the first state admitted to the union.
U> Delaware.
A> The capital of Delaware is Dover.
U> Delaware.
A> Delaware was the first state admitted to the union.
U> Delaware.
A> The capital of Delaware is Dover.

Now whenever I say "Delaware", Hal gives me one of two responses. Is this expected?

I have little knowledge of Hal, but very cool if it does work that way.

Quite. HAL is reading not only your immediate input to arrive at its response, but also the context of the entire conversation you are having.

If you train multiple responses to the same input, HAL will look for variables in the prior lines of dialog that will help it to correctly predict the response your previous training has indicated is most appropriate.

For example, my HAL, Prentiss, will reply to the question, "Why?" but the answer it gives, will be very dependent on why you ask "Why?" Depending on the conversation you are having, Prentiss might reply with any number of responses.

Here's a link to an old post that I think goes into some of this. It's probably more or less still pertinent...
